Flint in the show seems to be bi, not gay, so it really is just Thomas who seems to have been gay. In fact, James’s whole mission is to fulfill his former lover Thomas Hamilton’s goals of saving Nassau. So, queer wrath. I have shared my story on this blog before, but the important thing to know is that I grew up evangelical and happy to follow all of its rules.

When their relationship was discovered, James was exiled and his lover Thomas was sent to an asylum, where he died ish — unbury your gays! Captain James Flint is the glue that holds Black Sails to Treasure Island, so Toby Stephens’s portrayal definitely takes liberties with Flint’s sexuality.

It is easy to maintain this worldview if you stay inside the evangelical bubble. But practically, this strict boundary was made flexible for several culturally accepted sins like remarriage or sex before marriage as long as you felt bad about it.

Every time I watch this scene or read these words, they hit a little deeper. Christians approved of lifelong monogamous heterosexuality within the context of marriage, and…nothing else. I personally was very satisfied with queer representation in Black Sails, but I understand what you’re saying, and you’re right, being gay was more common amongst pirates than the show lets on.

This is my small attempt to illuminate the darkness. Starz’s “Black Sails” has been giving fans an inside look into how Captain James Flint found himself in the Bahamas through intense flashbacks of his past life in the British Royal Navy.

Overall, though, I found the same love, the same care, the same devotion. I found people who created community, who thought deeply about the world and who cared about helping those who needed help.
